Although less than 5% of the population suffers from severe mental illness, they comprise an estimated 20-40% of the homeless population.
To all reading here; The next time you meet up homeless person, you may want to sit down and talk with them. They could have family members you may be able to reconnect them with, who have been worried sick about them.
This is a prime example. Too many people look at the homeless as lazy or drunks. When in reality they are suffering from a disease.
If we treated cancer patients the same way we treat the mentally ill in this country (USA), people would be outraged. Disease is disease. Nobody should be treated differently because it can't been seen under a microscope.
Again, I'm thrilled to hear this story had a happy ending. There are far too many that don't.
